Węgorzewo (historical name: Angerburg) is a charming small town in northern Masuria, 10 km from Lake Mamry and 17 km from Wolf's Lair. It is an ideal base for exploring Masuria's historical, natural and recreational attractions. Poza Zgiełkiem, located 10 km from Węgorzewo centre in Stawki, is one of the highest-rated properties in the area.
Types of accommodation around Węgorzewo
The accommodation offer around Węgorzewo is varied. Hotels and guesthouses in town are convenient but rarely offer a private garden, privacy and space for groups. Agritourism – farm stays in Masurian style – is a popular option for families seeking nature and a homely atmosphere. Private rental houses like Poza Zgiełkiem are the best choice for groups – you can book the whole property or individual rooms like a guesthouse. Campsites and tent fields are ideal for nature lovers and lower budgets. Accommodation fills up most in July and August – book at least a month in advance.
Why staying outside the centre pays off – the Stawki area advantage
Stawki is a village between Węgorzewo and Sztynort, surrounded by forests and meadows. Staying here means the silence you won't find in town – no night-time traffic, no noise. At the same time, Stawki is 12 minutes from Węgorzewo centre, 3 km from Mamerki, 8 km from Steinort Palace and 17 km from Wolf's Lair. It is an ideal location for those who want to explore Masuria by car or bike but return at night to a private, peaceful space. What to see in the area when staying near Węgorzewo?
From Węgorzewo within 25 km there are dozens of exceptional attractions: Mamerki (OKH bunkers, 3 km), Steinort Palace (8 km), Wolf's Lair (17 km), Boyen Fortress in Giżycko (22 km), Lake Mamry (2 km from Poza Zgiełkiem) with a nice beach where swimming is possible. Cycling routes wind through Sztynort, along the Masurian Canal and around the lakes – routes from 15 to 65 km. Węgorzewo offers small restaurants serving Masurian fish (pike, vendace, pikeperch), marina cafés and a Saturday market with local produce. Lake Rydzówka (2 km from Poza Zgiełkiem) is a quiet swimming spot with a sandy beach, without crowds.
What accommodation around Węgorzewo costs
This is the question people ask most often, and the answer is usually nowhere to be found online – most places quote only after you send an enquiry. So here are ours, plainly. For the 2026 season a night at Poza Zgiełkiem costs from 280 PLN for a small double room, 350 PLN for the room with a terrace or the studio overlooking the garden, and 360 PLN for the triple. Every rate includes breakfast, taxes and all charges – the figure you see is the figure you pay. The whole house, five bedrooms and up to thirteen guests, is quoted individually. For comparison: in Węgorzewo itself you should expect similar rates in summer for a room without breakfast, and waterside campsite cabins can run higher at peak season.
When to book and how to choose your dates
The peak season in Masuria is July and August – smaller places sell out as early as spring, and on August weekends you can find nothing available for tens of kilometres around. If you want a particular room, or the whole house, book several months ahead. The best value, though, is June and September: the lakes are already, or still, warm, the days are long, and the trails and sights are noticeably quieter. May can be lovely, if cooler in the evenings. Out of season, from October to April, Masuria is quiet in a way you simply cannot experience in summer – a good time for a stay with a dog, a longer stretch of remote work, or a weekend by the fireplace.
Staying with a dog, staying with children
Two groups have the hardest time finding a place around here: dog owners and families with small children. Many properties right on the water either take no animals at all or charge steeply for them. With us dogs and cats are welcome at no extra cost, and a garden of some two thousand square metres with fields starting just beyond it means you do not need to drive anywhere for the dog to run. We do not run an online booking form, because with five rooms a conversation works better than a machine: we can advise on which room suits, fit the arrival time around you, and sort out breakfast or details of a stay with a dog. What to check when choosing a place to stay
A few things tend to decide whether a stay works out. First, distance from the road – many places around here sit on routes that carry heavy tourist traffic in summer, and you will want the windows open at night. Second, what exactly "on the lake" means: sometimes a private jetty, sometimes a kilometre's walk to a public beach. Third, breakfast – in this region it is often charged separately or not offered at all, and the nearest shop can be a dozen kilometres away. Fourth, parking: in Węgorzewo and Giżycko in summer, a space at the property has real value. And finally signal and internet – if you plan to work remotely, ask directly about the connection speed, because in smaller villages it varies.
Getting here and getting around
The easiest way to reach Węgorzewo is by car – around 250 km and roughly four hours from Warsaw, much the same from Gdańsk, under two from Olsztyn. Public transport reaches Węgorzewo by bus, but moving around the area itself without a car is hard: connections between villages are sparse and many sights lie beyond the reach of public transport altogether. The alternative is a bicycle – there are over three hundred kilometres of waymarked routes within thirty kilometres, and Mamerki or Sztynort are within an easy ride. Bikes can be stored securely with us, and parking at the house is free and never full.
