Most tourists know Masuria from the peak summer season – busy marinas, queues at restaurants and blazing beaches. But the real magic of Masuria begins when the crowds depart. The golden Polish autumn wraps Masurian forests in crimson and gold, while in winter frozen lakes and snow-covered forests create a crystal-clear fairytale landscape.
Autumn – Mushrooms, Colours and Peace
September and October are absolutely the most beautiful time in Masuria. Temperatures of 10–20°C, leaves burning gold and crimson, forests filling with mushrooms. The area around Węgorzewo is particularly rich in porcini, brown caps and chanterelles. The cycling season continues until November, with routes almost empty. Attractions like Steinort Palace in Sztynort or Wolf's Lair are much more accessible and enjoyable without the summer crowds – no queues, and the landscape is unique.
Winter – Frozen Lakes and Forest Silence
Frozen lakes – Mamry, Dargin, Święcajty – become natural ice rinks for skating and Nordic walking. In harsh winters, ice fishing enthusiasts arrive from across the region. Masurian forests under snow are absolutely magical – the silence of a snowy pine forest at dawn is an experience you will never forget. Węgorzewo and Giżycko offer year-round infrastructure, although some restaurants close from November to March.
Why Visit Off-Season?
Off-season, accommodation prices – including at Poza Zgiełkiem – are up to 30–50% lower than at the summer peak. Roads are empty, you don't need to book restaurants a week in advance, and lakeside walks don't mean fighting the crowds. For photographers, autumn and winter offer exceptional light – low-hanging sun, morning mist over the water and long golden sunset hours create unprecedented images. It's also the time when the Poza Zgiełkiem hosts can devote much more attention to guests.
When to Visit?
Best weeks: golden autumn – late September to early October; snowy winter – usually January–February. March and November can be rainy and grey. Check availability early. Autumn is also a great time for a [[family trip|mazury-dla-rodzin]] or touring [[top Masurian sights|masuren-sehenswuerdigkeiten]] crowd-free.
