Just 2 km from Poza Zgiełkiem stretches Lake Mamry – Poland's second largest lake and one of the cleanest bodies of water in Masuria. Its flat, windy waters attract sailors from all over Europe, while its peaceful bays are a paradise for kayakers, anglers and nature lovers.
Lake Statistics and Geography
Lake Mamry covers 104 km² and is part of the Great Masurian Lakes complex. The maximum depth is 43.8 m and the water is exceptionally clear – visibility reaches several metres. The lake is connected by canals to neighbouring lakes, forming part of the 2,000 km waterway network. Due to its size and frequent strong winds, it is the preferred spot for experienced sailors.
Sailing and Water Sports
Mamry is the mecca of Polish sailing. Yacht hire and sailing schools operate in the marinas at Węgorzewo, Ogonki and Kruklanka – all just a few kilometres from Poza Zgiełkiem. In the evenings you can watch dozens of white sails gliding across the lake. For kayakers we recommend the peaceful bays around Sztynort and Ogonki, while SUP enthusiasts will find ideal conditions in Czapla Bay by Steinort Palace.
Nature and Birdwatching
The shores of Mamry are home to many species of water birds. You can regularly observe white-tailed eagles – symbols of Polish nature – hunting just above the water surface. In spring and autumn Mamry is an important stopover for migratory birds travelling from Africa to Scandinavia. At dawn, when mist rises over the lake and the first rays of sun paint the water gold, the landscape is absolutely magical.

The supervised beach at Węgorzewo is available during the summer season. Kayak and pedalo hire operates at the marina in Ogonki, 4 km from Poza Zgiełkiem. Bring binoculars – birds are everywhere!
