Masuria with a Dog – Everything You Need to Know

Masuria is a paradise for dog owners. Unlimited expanses of meadows, forests and lake shores, low population density and widespread tolerance for four-legged companions make this region one of the most dog-friendly in all of Poland. Poza Zgiełkiem happily welcomes dogs – making it the perfect base for a Masurian adventure with your pet.

Dog-Friendly Beaches and Lakes

In Masuria, dogs are welcome on most beaches and at lake shores. Around Węgorzewo and Sztynort you'll find dozens of undeveloped lake shores where dogs can splash freely. The shores of Lake Mamry and the smaller lakes Kozi Rynek and Dobskie are ideal – long, sandy, with shallows where dogs can run safely. Remember that near nature reserves (Łuknajno, part of Mamry), dogs must be kept on a leash to avoid disturbing bird nests.

Hiking Trails with Your Dog

The area around Węgorzewo offers hundreds of kilometres of forest and field trails where dogs can run off-leash. We particularly recommend the forest paths around Sztynort – wild forests, minimal tourist traffic and an abundance of scents that will fascinate any dog. Remember that during tick season (April–October) it's a good idea to use antiparasitic products and check your dog after every forest walk. Winter is also amazing – animal tracks in the snow are canine reading material that no city park can match.

Pet-Friendly Stays and Restaurants

Poza Zgiełkiem is a pet-friendly property – your dog is just as important a guest as you are. The vast meadows and nearby forests are ideal for long, joyful walks. Restaurants and cafés in Węgorzewo are increasingly allowing dogs onto their terraces and putting out water bowls. At local shops you'll find basic dog food, but it's worth bringing your pet's favourite brand from home. A vet in Węgorzewo is available on weekdays – worth keeping the number handy.

Practical Tip

Bring proof of rabies vaccination. In summer, always keep a leash on you – nature reserves and some bathing areas require it. Pharmacies in Węgorzewo carry tick and mosquito repellents for dogs.
