When Bernard talks to guests about the area, he always starts with cycling. Flat terrain, vast forests, scenic lake shores and almost zero car traffic make Węgorzewo and its surroundings one of the best cycling destinations in Poland. Poza Zgiełkiem sits right at the heart of this land – just step out the gate and your adventure begins.
Why is Węgorzewo a cycling paradise?
Masuria is one of the flattest regions in Poland – elevation changes rarely exceed 30 metres. This means cycling routes are accessible even for people who don't ride regularly. Węgorzewo sits at the junction of several important trails: EuroVelo 11 (the Eastern Route), the Masurian Cycling Trail and numerous local routes linking lakeside villages. In total, more than 300 km of marked trails are mapped within 30 km of Poza Zgiełkiem.
EuroVelo 11 – European cycling route through Masuria
EuroVelo 11 passes through Węgorzewo – a route linking the North Cape in Norway to Athens in Greece. This European cycling trail runs through eastern Poland, including the Great Masurian Lakes, offering excellent surfaces and clear signage. From Poza Zgiełkiem you can easily join this route and ride north towards Gołdap or south along the chain of Masurian lakes.
Poza Zgiełkiem – Your cycling base
We have a safe storage area for bikes at the house – both for guests who arrive with their own wheels and for those who want to hire in Węgorzewo (rental 7 km away). Bernard is happy to share his favourite routes, point out great picnic spots by the lakes and help plan a day on two wheels. Pack sandwiches and a flask of coffee in your panniers – a Masurian lakeside picnic is an experience you'll remember for years.
Recommended cycling routes – specific suggestions
Lake Mamry loop (approx. 28 km): start from Poza Zgiełkiem towards Sztynort marina on Lake Mamry, continue along the shore to Ogonki and back through Węgorzewo – completely flat with plenty of lake views. Masurian Canal trail (approx. 18 km one-way): forest road along the disused canal from Leśniewo Górne to Gujki – ideal for families, almost no car traffic. Borska Forest – Kruklanka (18 km one-way): old-growth coniferous forest on unpaved tracks to a lakeside village; MTB recommended, with a summer ferry return option across the lake. Mamerki–Sztynort loop (approx. 35 km): connects the two biggest local attractions through villages, along lakes and through forest – scenic and historical at once. For advanced riders: loop to Giżycko (approx. 65 km) or the EuroVelo 11 stretch to Gołdap (approx. 50 km). GPX files for all routes are available in the Mapy.cz app.
What will you see along the way?
Cycling from Poza Zgiełkiem you can stop at the Mamerki bunkers (3 km) – one of Poland's largest WWII bunker complexes. The route to Sztynort (8 km) winds through forest, ending at the restored Steinort Palace on Lake Mamry with its heron colony. Along the Masurian Canal you'll find concrete locks, bridges and remnants of 1940s infrastructure – unique in Poland. Węgorzewo offers a market square with cafés for a break and charging your phone. In summer, ice cream stands and small sailing charter points operate at the lakeside – worth planning a waterside stop.
Starting tip
Book an e-bike at least a week ahead in July and August – they go fast in high season. Having an offline map (e.g. Mapy.cz app or a GPX track from traseo.pl) on the trail is a good idea. Helmet and pump are essentials – there's a bike service shop in central Węgorzewo. On the route, stop at the [[Bismarck Tower|wieza-bismarcka]] in Srokowo (7 km) and the Prussian manor [[Mieduniszki|mieduniszki]] (6 km).
