Węgorzewo – Gateway to the Great Masurian Lakes

Just 7 km from Poza Zgiełkiem lies Węgorzewo – a charming town on the edge of the Great Masurian Lakes, often called the "gateway to Masuria". This is where over 2,000 km of Masurian waterways begin, and every summer sailing boats from all over Europe call at its marina.

History and the Teutonic Castle

Węgorzewo (German: Angerburg) has over 700 years of history. The town was founded in the 14th century, with a Teutonic castle at its centre, the ruins of which can still be admired on Lake Węgorzewskie. In the 16th century, amber trade along the Baltic route flourished here. After World War II, the town was incorporated into Poland – the former German inhabitants left and were replaced by Poles from eastern Europe, creating a unique cultural mosaic.

Marina – the Water Gateway of Masuria

Węgorzewo marina is one of the most important hubs of the Great Masurian Lakes System – an extensive network of 2,000 km of waterways. From Węgorzewo lock, you can sail to Giżycko, Mikołajki and many other Masurian towns. In summer the marina buzzes with life: yachts from all over Europe moor here, and waterfront restaurants serve fresh fish from the Masurian lakes – be sure to try smoked vendace!

What Else to See?

Węgorzewo town centre delights with a charming market square, cafés and local crafts. Worth visiting is the Castle Gallery and the 16th-century parish church. Nearby are the Folk Culture Museum (ul. Portowa 1) and the Railway Heritage Museum with its unique draisine rides – both worth visiting on the same day. For active recreation enthusiasts, we recommend bike hire – the cycling routes around Węgorzewo are excellently marked and lead through picturesque Masurian forests and fields.

Visitor Tip

Parking at the marina is free. On the market square you will find a local bakery with Masurian bread and regional delicacies. In June, the Borderland Culture Festival takes place in Węgorzewo – worth checking the dates. The town is also the [[cycling capital of Masuria|wegorzewo-rowerowa-stolica]].
