Masuria is the sailing capital of Poland – over 2,000 lakes connected by canals form one of Europe's largest inland sailing areas. Every summer thousands of sailors from Poland and Germany set off on Masurian waterways. Poza Zgiełkiem is 2 km from Lake Mamry – Poland's second-largest lake and one of Masuria's most beautiful sailing venues.
Lake Mamry – sailing right next to Poza Zgiełkiem
Lake Mamry (104 km²) is Poland's second-largest natural lake. Its open, wide surface gives sailors excellent wind conditions, especially May through September. Sztynort marina (8 km from Poza Zgiełkiem) offers moorings, water, power and a chandlery. Węgorzewo marina (10 km) is a larger harbour with full facilities – yachts can be chartered here without prior experience if the crew has completed a sailing course. Canal connections from Mamry lead south into the Great Masurian Lakes system – you can sail all the way to Mikołajki (70 km) without going ashore.
How to charter a yacht in Masuria?
In Poland no licence is required to skipper an inland yacht up to 7.5 m – completing a sailing course or hiring a vessel with a skipper is sufficient. The full sailing season runs from May to September, with peak in July–August when prices are highest and bookings should be made months in advance. Chartering a 6–8-person yacht for a week costs roughly PLN 4,000–8,000 depending on season and boat standard. Yacht rentals in Węgorzewo and Giżycko offer boats of all sizes – from kayaks and motorboats to full sailing yachts. If you have no experience, starting with a skippered yacht or a week-long sailing course on Lake Mamry is a great option.
The Great Masurian Lakes – waterway route
The classic Great Masurian Lakes sailing route runs from Węgorzewo across Mamry, Kisajno, Dargin, Niegocin to Giżycko, then through Bełdany to Mikołajki – roughly 110 km one-way, a week of relaxed sailing. Locks along the route (including Giżycko) are free and run smoothly in season. Along the way you pass historic towns, forest coves and wild beaches accessible only from the water. Marina towns like Giżycko, Ryn and Mikołajki offer restaurants, grocery shops and the lively marina evening culture. For families with children the Mamry–Dargin–Węgorzewo loop (approx. 3 days) is ideal.
Practical information for sailors
The best wind in Masuria blows from the west and south-west, average force 3–4 Beaufort. Sudden thunderstorms are possible from May to August – always check the IMGW forecast and do not ignore squall warnings. Inland navigation rules apply on Lake Mamry – cutters and ferries have right of way. Shore protection: many bays and bird sanctuaries are closed to navigation from 1 March to 31 July – respect the bans, alternative routes are always marked. Poza Zgiełkiem is an excellent land base for windless days or rest between cruises – we can drop you off at Sztynort or Węgorzewo marina.
Sailor's tip
Book your marina berth at least a month in advance in July and August. Sztynort marina has limited spaces – it's worth calling them directly. From Poza Zgiełkiem we can arrange a drop-off and pick-up at the marina – contact us before you arrive.
