Święta Lipka – Baroque sanctuary in Masuria

About 52 km from Poza Zgiełkiem, in a small Warmian village, stands one of the most magnificent Baroque works in Poland – the Sanctuary of the Visitation of Our Lady at Święta Lipka. Pilgrims have been coming here for over 500 years, drawn by the miraculous statue of Our Lady and the famous organ with singing angel figures.

History – from a miraculous tree to a Baroque basilica

Legend has it that in the 15th century, a condemned prisoner awaiting execution carved a figure of Our Lady and placed it on a lime tree. The next morning he was found innocent – and the figure began to work miracles. The first records of a chapel by the holy lime tree date to 1491. After destruction during the Reformation, Jesuits rebuilt the sanctuary in the 17th century; the current Baroque church was erected in 1688–1693 and is considered a masterpiece of Central European sacred architecture. In 2018 it was inscribed on the list of Historic Monuments of Poland.

The famous organ with dancing angels

The sanctuary's main attraction is the organ from 1721 – an instrument that is both musical and visual. During play, wooden figurines of angels and saints in the organ case begin to move, enchanting pilgrims and tourists for generations. The organ has 40 stops and exceptional mechanical action. Organ concerts are held regularly throughout the summer season – it is worth checking the schedule and planning your visit to coincide with one.

Cloisters, chapels and surroundings

The church is surrounded by unique cloisters with four corner chapels, decorated with frescoes and stucco. This is one of the few such complexes preserved in this form in northeastern Poland. The sanctuary has a pilgrimage centre with accommodation. Nearby – 3 km away – lies Reszel with its Gothic castle. The whole Warmian region – with Lidzbark Warmiński, Reszel and Święta Lipka – forms a perfect loop for a day trip from Poza Zgiełkiem.

Visitor tip

Plan your visit during one of the regular organ concerts – times are listed on the sanctuary's website. Entry to the sanctuary is completely free. Nearby, combine your visit with [[Reszel Castle|zamek-reszel]] (3 km) and [[Lidzbark Warmiński|lidzbark-warminski]] (approx. 25 km) – creating a full Warmian loop from Poza Zgiełkiem.
