Just 7 km from Poza Zgiełkiem, in Srokowo (German: Drengfurth), stands one of the several hundred towers erected across the German Empire in honour of Otto von Bismarck – the first Chancellor of unified Germany. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, it is today an interesting monument of Prussian architecture and an excellent viewpoint over the lakes and forests of Masuria.
The Bismarck Tower Phenomenon
After the death of Otto von Bismarck in 1898, a true cult of the first chancellor broke out across Germany and the Prussian lands. Between 1869 and 1934, nearly 240 towers bearing his name were erected – they served simultaneously as monuments, viewpoint terraces and places where fire was lit on the anniversary of Bismarck's birthday. Most were built in Neo-Romanesque or Neo-Gothic style, from solid stone or brick blocks designed to dominate the surrounding landscape. Many of these structures survive to this day, attracting visitors as testimony to the belle époque of Prussian patriotism.
The Tower in Srokowo – History and Architecture
The tower in Srokowo was built on a hill from red brick, characteristic of Prussian construction at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The structure was meant to serve both a commemorative and practical function – it offered a wide view over the surrounding forests and Masurian lakes. During World War II the Srokowo (German: Drengfurth) region was the scene of intense fighting in Warmia and Masuria. The structure itself survived, and after 1945, when Srokowo returned to Poland, it has been gradually recovering its historical character.
View from the Tower and Surroundings
From the top of the tower spreads a peaceful Masurian panorama – vast forests, fields and in the distance the blue surface of Lake Mamry and the surrounding lakes. Srokowo is a less tourist-frequented part of Masuria, so a visit here allows you to experience the authentic atmosphere of Prussian Warmia and Masuria away from the crowds. The area is ideal to explore by bicycle or car.
Visitor Tip
The tower pairs well with nearby Sztynort and Steinort Palace (about 1 km further) and the Mamerki OKH bunker complex – all three attractions lie within a few kilometres of each other and make an excellent full-day cycling route from Poza Zgiełkiem.
