46 km from Poza Zgiełkiem, at the junction of lakes Śniardwy and Mikołajskie, lies one of the most beautiful and most recognisable towns in Poland – Mikołajki, known as the "Capital of Masuria". Every summer it attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists from around the world.
The Legend of the King of Fish and the Town's History
Mikołajki is famous for the legend of the "King of Fish" – a giant pike said to rule the underwater creatures of the Masurian lakes. Every year in August the Fishing Festival takes place, where fishing tradition meets modern culinary art. The town's historic buildings – colourful houses, the historic evangelical church and bridges – delight photographers. The first mention of Mikołajki dates from the 15th century, and for centuries it was an important fish trade centre.
Marina and Lake Śniardwy
Mikołajki marina is one of the largest in Masuria and the base from which to set sail on Lake Śniardwy – Poland's largest lake (110 km²). For Masurian sailors, Śniardwy is a real sea: changeable weather, strong winds and numerous islands create an ideal challenge for experienced skippers. For tourists there are commercial boat trips, pedalo hire and sailing schools for children and adults.
Gastronomy and Nightlife
The main street of Mikołajki is one big pedestrian promenade with restaurants, cafés and souvenir shops. At every step you will find freshly smoked fish, fish dumplings and craft Masurian beer. In the summer season the town is lively late into the night – waterfront bars play live music. It is worth arriving in the morning and staying for a full day of sightseeing to fully experience the unique Masurian atmosphere.
Visitor Tip
In July and August Mikołajki is very crowded. Parking in the centre is limited – best to use the large car park at the town entrance. Arriving in the morning makes sightseeing much easier.
