Krutynia Kayak Trail – the Jewel of Masurian Waterways

58 km from Poza Zgiełkiem begins the Krutynia Kayak Trail – one of the most beautiful and scenic kayak routes in Poland and Europe. The Krutynia river, meandering through primeval forests, peat bogs and chains of lakes in the Masurian Landscape Park, offers a unique water adventure for whole families.

Route and Trip Characteristics

The Krutynia Kayak Trail is about 100 km long and runs through 12 lakes and river sections. The traditional start is from Lake Sominko or Lake Roś near Stare Kiełkuty, and the finish is at the mouth of the Krutynia into Lake Bełdany. The river current is gentle and safe, making the trail accessible for families with children. Estimated kayaking time is 5–7 days, though many people complete it in 3–4 days by skipping some of the lake sections.

Nature and the Masurian Landscape Park

The route runs through the Masurian Landscape Park and near the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve at Łuknajno. Along the river grow mighty alder and beech trees, and on the banks you can spot beavers, otters, cranes and white-tailed eagles. The sections through peat bogs and the Pisa Forest give the feeling of an expedition into wild, untouched nature. In spring the riverbanks are covered with blooming marsh marigolds and wild garlic.

Trip Organisation and Accommodation

Along the route there are dozens of kayak hire companies, campsites and agritourism farms offering accommodation and meals. The main bases are Krutyń (centre of the trail), Sorkwity and Ruciane-Nida. Many of them provide equipment and car transport for the route. Bookings in July and August should be made several weeks in advance – the trail is very popular then.

Visitor Tip

The best time to kayak is May, June or the end of August/September – fewer crowds and lower prices. Mosquitoes are very active at dawn and dusk – bring repellent. Take a waterproof case for your phone!
